The Sollars Elementary School Beginning Band and Second-year Band meet from 0700 to 0800 on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. The bands play a winter concert and a spring concert. This activity is open to a limited number of fifth and sixth graders.

Book and Cook Club meets 1 – 2 times a month. It is offered to kindergarten students. We read a story and talk about the process of cooking a particular item. For instance, we read The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza and we made our own personal English muffin pizzas. |

Students who participate in the musical theater productions are required to audition. Auditions are announced in the classroom and in the parent newsletter. Performances are held throughout the year. |

The Computer Art Club meets weekly after school. The students digital cameras, Kid Pix, and Irfanview to do most of our projects. In the fall grades 5-6 meet, in the winter grades 3-4, and in the spring, grades 1-2 meet. |

Craft Club is an opportunity for students in grades 1-6 to make items for themselves and others as they learn how to use a variety of crafting techniques. The group meets in three 9-week sessions, first grades 5 and 6, then 3 and 4, and finally 1 and 2. |

Drama club is offered to 20 – 25 students grades K-2. It is an opportunity to learn about telling stories through poems songs and skits. Each session lasts 5 weeks with a performance at the end for the parents. |

H.E.L.P. (Helping Elementary Learners Progress) is an after school-school tutoring program which provides individualized assistance for students in grades 1-6 who need assistance completing homework assignments and/or need extra practice on specific academic skills. HELP tutors are active-duty military members and other community members who volunteer their time to give assistance to our young people. |

These clubs are offered for both beginning and more advanced Japanese language learners. Students learn Kanji and Hiragana as well as basic conversational skills. |

Enter the exciting world of video editing. Use the latest electronic gadgets to create video productions. The club will produce several video projects throughout the year. Open to a limited number of fifth and sixth graders. |

Open Gym is an after school activity for students who want to come in and work on basketball skills or form teams and play games. It is open to all Sollars students, boys and girls K through 6. No formal instruction is conducted, but the sponsor is available for students who need help with basic skills. A schedule of the dates is posted on the gym door for interested students. |

Pre-Algebra Club is for 20 dedicated, 6th grade math students. We use a hands-on, fun approach to balancing equations and learning the basics of algebra. It definitely helps them by the time they get to middle and high school. |

5th and 6th-grade students are recruited as crossing guards on the basis of citizenship, reliability, and responsibility. Life skills of cooperating and working as a group are emphasized.The students are trained and assigned to one of three crews. Each crew works three weeks and then has six weeks off. At the end of a 3-week period, there is a 45 minute gym session and a party. Experienced patrols are groomed as officers and provided leadership opportunities: organization, decision-making, setting the proper example. |

American Sign Language, like spoken language, is used to convey meaning. Spoken with the hands, sign language has been used by members of the deaf and hard of hearing communities as well as within the hearing communities. The purpose of the club is to educate students in the art of sign. Throughout the course of the year sign vocabulary, history, and sign language use will be covered. Specific vocabulary that will be learned include, but are not limited to: colors, basic sign alphabet, school terms, home terms, food, animal signs, transportation signs, nature, emotions, the use of time, clothing, etc. By the conclusion of this year it is hoped that those who attend will learn to have a better appreciation of themselves and be able to utilize their newfound knowledge in productive ways. |

The SK8 Club meets on Thursdays after school. Each month, a different group of students meets their coaches off-base at the Misawa Ice Rink to learn beginning skating skills. The clubs end before April 1st and by then, our dedicated skating coaches will have taught approximately 80 Sollars students in grades K-6 how to ice skate. |

Soroban is a manual calculator. Students practice addition and subtraction in written and oral form. The students practice very hard to prepare for an annual Soroban contest in June. |

Twenty-four 6th-grade students are provided the opportunity to learn the lifetime sport of volleyball. Emphasis is placed on learning skills, rules, team play, and experiencing game sitations. The formal program consists of 15 2-hour practice sessions starting in September and ending in early November. |

Yearbook Club is an opportunity for sixth grade students to get some hands on information on how a yearbook is put together. The students work on publicity, bookkeeping, page layout format, and design. |
